Great Gardeners

This is a great link to info about great gardening dignitaries past and present.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Lancelot “Capability” Brown (1716 – 1783) – British – I just love his name! The nickname apparently came from his fondness for speaking about a country estate having a great ‘capability’ for improvement.

Garrett Eckbo (1910 – 2000) – American – His first book “Landscape for Living” (1950) showed a fresh new Californian approach to the modern garden.

Fletcher Steele (1885 – 1971) – American – Another great name! Here is my favorite quote of his: “The chief vice in gardens is to be merely pretty.”

Roberto Burle Marx (1909 – 1994) – Brazilian – Striking, bold design.

Thomas Church (1902 – 1978) – American – pioneer of the ‘California Style’

Others worth noting (not on the gardenvisit.com site):
Luis Barragan
Jamie Durie
Martha Schwartz
Topher Delaney
